Blackjacks

The Blackjacks are a military unit without an army to belong to. The core of the unit are the surviving members of the 21st Squadron of the Alpha Tactical Armored Corps of the Army of the Southern Cross, aka The Blackjacks. The 21st took its nickname from its commander, Captain John "Black Jack" Mace, and its successor unit has kept the name to honor their fallen comrades. After the Second Robotech War, the remains of the 21st signed on with Col. Jonathan Wolfe's Robotech Expeditionary Force. Wolfe was trying to rebuild the shattered United Earth Defense Force in a desperate bid to form a viable planetary defense against the approaching Invid.

The survivors of the 21st were kept together as a mecha unit, bolstered by three surviving members of another armored unit, the 403rd Home Guard. As Wolfe attempted to forge a viable chain of command amongst the scattered and bickering remnants of the Southern Cross, the Blackjacks were sent on a variety of high-risk missions, sometimes not even sure where exactly their orders were coming from. Trapped in orbit when the Invid horde arrived, the unit escaped destruction only to find themselves stranded in the wastelands of central Asia when they were at last able to return to the planet's surface. Afterwards the unit headed west hoping to find signs of civilization or survivors, all the while trying to avoid detection by the Earth's new alien masters.

During their journey the Blackjacks picked up some new members, a young novice soldier from Wolfe's Expeditionary Forces and the lone survivor of a Soviet Cosmonaut Unit, and lost some as well, when the injured Karen Davison left the group, before finally reuniting with Col. Wolfe's forces at Point K in South America. Always independent-minded, the Blackjacks soon tired of the "dig in and wait" attitude at Point K and, at the request of Nova Satori, have split from the core United Earth Forces at Point K. The unit have resumed their wandering ways, joined by a former Southern Cross deserter, and have started seeking out others willing to help resist the Invid occupation.

Kyler is the only child of a wealthy Irish-American family. His father's company held a number of important contracts with the UEG. The infant Kyler and his parents were in South America when the Zentraedi devastated the planet in 2011 and survived with much of their personal wealth intact. The familiy's UEG connections put their company in a position to benefit greatly from the Reconstruction.

The family influence earned Kyler's father a liaison position in Montevideo during the Zentraedi unrest and throughout the Malcontent Uprisings. With the formation of the independent Merchant Republic, Kyler's father still held a strong position. Kyler grew up mainly in Montevideo, where his family status led him live a life of privelege. For Kyler this meant fast cars and beautiful women were are major part of his childhood.

It all came crashing down shortly after Kyler's 18th birthday, when the N.W.O. conflict erupted and the Merchant Republic declared war on the UEG. The family's assets were seized and the family barely managed to escape to Ascendance City. Left penniless, Kyler joined the Southern Cross. His training finished too late to fight in the N.W.O. conflict, but he soon found himself on the front lines of the Second Robotech War.

As the war went on and the ASC top brass became desperate, Kyler's unit was assigned to an obvious suicide mission. Kyler's sense of preservation (and common sense) overrode any loyalty and he went AWOL while the rest of his unit went off and were killed. He spent the months after the war roaming the Amazon jungles, surviving by trading favors and occasional mercenary work.

When Col. Wolfe and the REF arrived and offered amnesty to those that signed on the help combat the Invid, as well as the offer to evacuate the families of volunteers, Kyler agreed and was reinstated. At the main UEF base established at Point K, Kyler found that many of the soldiers did not trust him due to his earlier status as a deserter. Kyler eventually did find some cameraderie when he was assigned a new bunkmate from the recently arrived 21st Blackjacks Squad, Geoff "Punchout" Richards. Because Kyler was familiar with the area, Geoff suggested he join the 21st on their first few perimeter patrols to help them get a feel for the territory. Later, when the Blackjacks decided to leave Point K and strike out on their own they invited Kyler to join them.
