Southern Cross Who's Who - Karen Davison

Personality

Karen appears to be a study in contradiction. Often she can still come across as the flighty high-society party girl she was as a teenager, cutting loose with wild abandon. Other times she will be all business, forceful and aggressive. Deep down she is very much her own person, spiritual and intuitive, but she only shares her innermost thoughts with her personal diary. Karen also harbors a deep-seated desire to free her family and exact vengeance on their captors. Befitting her royal heritage, she is well spoken and can have a very commanding presence when she tries. In her love life, Karen tends to move from lover to lover, both male and female, never getting involved with anyone for very long and never letting things get serious.

Biography

Karina Elizabeth Sofia Davison is royalty, as much as that can mean in the post-Reconstruction world. Her father is a cousin of the British Royal Family and her mother is related to the Greek and Danish Royal Families. An only child, Karen (she prefers to go with the Anglicized form of her name) was born in London, England during the height of the post-Global Civil War renaissance. She and her parents were vacationing in South America when the Zentraedi planetary assault happened in 2011 and were thus spared the destruction and suffering that swept encompassed much of Europe in the aftermath.

Eventually the family relocated to Oslo where Karen's parents became involved with the United Earth Government. Karen enjoyed all the privileges her social standing allowed and became a darling of the night life in Oslo and Stockholm.Karen's worry-free lifestyle would not last, however. When she was a teenager, Karen's parents went on a humanitarian and diplomatic mission to the Eastern Bloc Soviet Independent State. A few days after their arrival, the EBSIS government arrested the Davisons on charges of espionage. Apparently the community of expatriate Greek refugees living in ghettos in Germany and Poland had started rallying around Karen's mother as a nationalist symbol. There were scattered incidents of insurgent violence, enough that the EBSIS considered Karen's parents a threat and arrested them. The UEG protested but the EBSIS ignored the threats and diplomatic efforts to get the Davisons released proved fruitless. The incident was one of the first to contribute to increased tensions between the UEG an EBSIS.

The loss of her parents changed Karen from free spirit to focused. She became determined to free her family, and if diplomacy could not do it then perhaps force would. Surprising many, Karen joined the Southern Cross. While her intelligence put her in the science speciality, Karen went against expectations and signed up for the Alpha Tactical Armored Corps. By her reasoning, the Veritech mecha were the most powerful weapons in the UEG arsenal so that is where she would focus her attention. When she graduated from the Academy, Karen wanted to be stationed in Scandinavia Quadrant, but her superiors realized the potential for an incident so they assigned her to the 403rd Home Guard civil defense squadron in Monument City instead.

As tensions between the UEG and EBSIS threatened to erupt into open war, Karen secretly hoped for the worst so that she could request a transfer to any unit sent to fight in EBSIS territory. Fortunately, or not as far as Karen was concerned, the real enemy was revealed to be a third party attempting to force the two powers to go to war so it could emerge and pick up the pieces in the aftermath. Instead of battling each other, the UEG and EBSIS joined forces to stop this new threat, the New World Order.

With Monument City far removed from any of the battle fronts, Karen did not see any action during the N.W.O. conflict. That would not be the case for the next major conflict. When the Robotech Masters arrived, Monument City became ground zero for many of the major encounters of the Second Robotech War. The 403rd was involved in many battles, most notably in the devastating final offensive of the war in which the Robotech Masters unleashed thousands of ground troops in addition to their Bioroid forces in an effort to wipe out all of humankind. Karen was one of the only members of her unit to survive, alongside medic Charles Caplan-Somerset and communications specialist Gabriel McManus.

In the wake of the war many soldiers chose to flee, but not the members of the 403rd. Karen and Gabriel rallied around Charles as he attempted to help as many of the survivors of Monument City as he could. As Charles set up emergency medical facilities, Karen and Gabriel used their mecha to help maintain order. Though she frequently thought of deserting and somehow making her way back to Europe to find her family, Karen stayed loyal to her squad-mates. When Col. Wolfe and the REF arrived and asked former Southern Cross soldiers to sign on with them in preparation to defend the planet against the coming Invid invasion, Karen agreed. Secretly she hoped to use the resources of the returning REF to help free her family from the Soviets. Since signing on Karen, along with Charles and Gabriel, have been assigned to the 21st A.T.A.C. squadron.

Call Sign: The 403rd Home Guard did not use call signs and Karen has yet to take one on since joining the 21st.
