Background
Fox Maje's parents were originally from France near the Spanish border. After the Zentraedi planetary assault of 2011 the two and their infant son, Fox, became refugees. They were among the horde of European refugees who fled south to the Mediterranean instead of north, towards Scandinavia Quadrant. The three were among the relatively small number of refugees who were able to escape the devastated continent by boat. The small refugee fleet sailed through the Straight of Gibraltar and headed south, around the devastated northern portion of the African continent until it reached Africa's Gold Coast. Fox's parents soon found work helping with the Reconstruction efforts in the region and were involved in construction and transportation in the city of Lagos.
The stronger RDF military presence in Lagos, which developed after 2016, meant more work for Fox's family and his parents often took him on the job, as much as they were permitted. In school Fox showed an aptitude for languages and had mastered Russian, Japanese and Zentraedi by the age of ten, mostly from his parents' co-workers and their families as well as the soldiers based nearby during the Malcontent Uprisings.
At the age of fifteen Fox started to associate with classmates who shared an interest in rebelling and avoiding school or employment. His friends, David 'Tiny' Cooper and Gertrude 'Goat' Reinbecker, were motor enthusiasts but with little resources and no income. His only serious conflict came about when his then romantic relation, Wendy 'Red' Curtis' personal political views changed to the counter-UEG views of EBSIS. In the guise of a get-rich-quick scheme arranged by Wendy; Fox, Tiny, Goat and their friends were unknowingly tricked into performing an intricate EBSIS loyalty test for Wendy. By luck more than anything the young friends were able to interfere with the transfer of sensitive information gathered by Wendy and destined for EBSIS. Fox and his friends were the last people to see Wendy, when she left Lagos on a ship headed for the Merchant Republic of South America.
Soon after Fox felt that his future would have more opportunity by travelling abroad. By then the extent of what Wendy had done had become known to the authorities, but Fox and his friends' (accidental) thwarting of the plot ensured they were not implicated. In the end Fox signed on for military service and was accepted to the Southern Cross Military Academy.
Fox grew up as no one special and as an adolescent he was a typical slacker. His friends were no encouragement as he associated with like-minded slackers. Only his mild interest in thrill seeking got him to wake up most mornings. This attitude, and his talent for languages and familiarity with RDF and UEG military in the Lagos region, barely managed to get Fox through the Academy. Fox managed to acquire a thin veneer of military discipline, enough to get him through military training, and he finished in the median percentile of his class for his military field of Communications.
The Army decided to station Fox with the 474th Armored Squadron in Japan, a unit generally used a placeholder for more lucrative assignments, though in Fox's case he was assigned there because officials aren't sure what to do with the underachiever. That and he can speak Japanese.
Call Sign: When he started with the 474th ATAC Fox developed a habit of running errands and doing favors for some of the others on the team. Coupled with his role in communications, this earned him the name O.L., short for Office Lady, a term frequently used in Japanese businesses to refer to administrative assistants.
Recent History
As tensions between the UEG and EBSIS began to rise the 474th started uncovering evidence of a conspiracy to start a war between the two powers. Their prying apparently got the attention of someone who wanted to get rid of them because the squadron was soon assigned to a suicide mission in Indochina. Almost half the squadron were killed and O.L. and the others only survived due to the timely arrival of another hovertank squadron, the 21st ATAC (aka the Blackjacks). O.L. and the surviving members of the 474th were folded into the 21st and joined the Blackjacks at their home base in northern Australia.
O.L. and with the other members of the 21st helped reveal the existence of the New World Order terrorist organization that had been trying to start a war between the UEG and EBSIS. Once forced out into the open, the NWO started a global conflict anyway, with their allied factions declaring war on the UEG and EBSIS both. O.L. saw frequent combat with the 21st during World War IV and earned a reputation for his ability with long-range fire, electronic warfare and sensor operations.
The frequent travels of the 21st to different conflict zones during the war also inspired O.L. to try out some new get-rich-quick schemes like he used to try as an adolescent. Anytime the 21st was due to be shipped out O.L. would pack every available space of his hovertank with comfort foods, novelties and entertainment items that he could use for trade or sale wherever he wound up. Once at a new location he would also chat up the supply personnel and the locals to get the best deal he could for his wares.
Fox continued his service into the Second Robotech War, where he continued to work on both his combat and mercantile skills. He got into frequent trouble with the rest of the squadron as they often would disobey orders or go around a superior's back to accomplish a mission they saw as necessary for the war effort.
O.L. was one of the few members of the 21st ATAC to survive the Second Robotech War and he accompanied the group as they made their way from the devastated Australia to the relative safety of New Zealand. After helping the local New Zealand government set up a defense infrastructure O.L. and the 21st opted to join with the SLV Ulysses carrier vessel as it sails around the world to determine the fate of the other Southern Cross forces in the aftermath of the war.
