USS MELBOURNE JUNIOR OFFICERS

Command Officers

REYDON, Echo

  • Rank: Lieutenant Junior Grade
  • Assignment: Flight Control Officer
  • Species: Betazoid
  • Gender: Male

Lt. JG Echo Reydon is the day shift Flight Control Officer of the USS Melbourne. As a teenager Echo was on Betazed when it was occupied by Dominion forces. He and his family were saved from a Jem'Hadar attack by a guerrilla force led by current USS Melbourne Chief of Security Mera Tir. This inspired Echo to enroll at Starfleet Academy where he specialized in flight operations. Despite showing great talent in starship and shuttlecraft piloting, Echo was relegated to ferry duties at Starbase 41. His ability was noted by Jackson Mitchell, who promised to bring the young officer onboard whenever he got his first command, a promise that was kept when Capt. Mitchell assumed command of the Melbourne.

While mostly seeing little action during the first few months aboard, Echo was selected for an Away Team mission on the planet Antara, not for his piloting skills but due to his Betazoid telepathy. He was at the helm of the USS Melbourne when it first engaged a K'thon mothership shortly after this.

SERIN

  • Rank: Lieutenant
  • Assignment: Records Officer
  • Species: Vulcan
  • Gender: Male

Lt. Serin is a Records Officer in the Command division on board the USS Melbourne. A Vulcan, Lt. Serin is one of the most powerful telepaths on the vessel. He was briefly a suspect in the attempted assassination of Ambassador Sh'Rassa but circumstances quickly cleared him of the suspicion. Lt. Serin later rotated on to Delta Shift, where he would be in command of the bridge during the USS Melbourne's night shift. His preference while in command during the overnight is to have other Vulcans at key bridge stations.

Engineering Officers

TARKA, Elise

  • Rank: Lieutenant Commander
  • Assignment: Chief Engineering Officer
  • Species: Human/Risian
  • Gender: Female

Lt. Cmdr. Elise Tarka is a 20-year Starfleet veteran. After graduating from Starfleet Academy she served on a series of vessels before joining the Task Force led by Commander Elizabeth Shelby assigned to rebuild the fleet after the devastating losses at Wolf 359. During the Dominion War, her Risian pacifist beliefs kept her from serving on front-line vessels so instead she served in the Starfleet Corps of Engineers on a team assigned to the repair and refurbishment of older vessels to supplement the fleet. Elise was later part of one of the teams assigned to the rebuilding of Starfleet Headquarters following the Breen attack on San Francisco. Her next major assignment was with the Advanced Starship Design Bureau participating on a team adapting the new technologies brought back from the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager for use in the latest classes of vessels like the Ross, Vesta, and Odyssey classes. She was courted to serve as Chief Engineer on several brand new vessels of these classes, but preferred an engineering ship and signed on as Chief Engineer of the Parliament-class USS Melbourne when the opportunity presented itself. Though she holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander and a position as one the senior division chiefs on the vessel, Lt. Cmdr. Tarka is not part of the USS Melbourne's chain of command.

Science Officers

CARSON, Philip

  • Rank: Lieutenant
  • Assignment: Science Officer
  • Species: Human
  • Gender: Male

Lt. Philip "Pip" Carson is a Science division officer serving on the USS Melbourne. Lt. Carson is the head of Stellar Cartography aboard the vessel and can usually be found in Astrometrics. He was in charge of the survey of the edge of the Cygnus Sector when an unusual subspace signal was detected coming from an M Class planet in the region.

STECK

  • Rank: Lieutenant
  • Assignment: Science Officer
  • Species: Vulcan
  • Gender: Male

Lt. Steck is a Science division officer serving on the USS Melbourne. A Vulcan, Steck is a biochemist and expert in toxicology. He was instrumental in the analysis of the exotic toxins used by the spider-like creatures infesting a derelict Ferengi vessel. Steck later served at the Science Station on the Bridge during the crisis with a militant Bajoran religious sect. Lt. Steck headed the Science teams analysis of an infestation of spider-like creatures on a newly discovered planet. Steck often serves as Science Officer under Lt. Serin during overnight bridge duty shifts.

Medical Officers

SINGER, Thomas

  • Rank: Lieutenant Commander
  • Assignment: Chief Medical Officer
  • Species: Human
  • Gender: Male

Dr. Thomas (Tom) Singer was born and raised on Umoth VIII, a Federation colony near Cardassian space. Tom, having seen the effect of the Federation-Cardassian conflict on the colony, including food shortages and other health crises, decided to pursue a career in medicine, attending Starfleet Academy and then Starfleet Medical Academy after the completion of his primary studies. The end of Tom's time at the Academy coincided with the signing of the Federation-Cardassian Treaty, where his home colony of Umoth VIII was transferred to Cardassian control. Tom was almost recruited into the Maquis by a childhood friend at this point, but he held to his Starfleet oath and did not join them. Tom's initial assignments were in the area of the DMZ, and when the Dominion War started he became a field medic, working in mobile hospitals near the front lines and occasionally embedded directly with combat units. After the War, Tom participated in relief efforts, both for Federation worlds caught in the conflict and even Cardassian worlds that had been devastated by Dominion retaliation during the final days of the War. His efforts led to an interest in Ketracel-White, with Tom pursuing research in its potential as a source of nutrition in emergencies and disaster areas. His Starfleet career was not a priority for Tom, so it was a surprise to him when he learned his name had been put forward by one of his superiors for the post of Chief Medical Officer on the newly commissioned USS Melbourne. Initially hesitant, Tom ultimately accepted the position and joined the crew on its maiden mission to the far reaches of the Alpha Quadrant.

ZHOU, Jin

  • Rank: Lieutenant Commander
  • Assignment: Ship's Counselor
  • Species: Human
  • Gender: Male

Dr. Jin Zhou studied psychiatry and pharmacology at Beijing University on Earth, where he earned a Doctorate in Psychiatry. He continued his studies at the Alpha Centauri Academy of Biosciences, studying Xenopsychology. Due to the diversity of Federation member species serving aboard the newly commissioned USS Melbourne, plus the prospect of numerous First Contact situations during the vessel's maiden mission to the edges of the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet knew they needed a highly skilled candidate to fill the role of Ship's Counselor. Their search led them to Dr. Zhou, who accepted the invitation and was recruited into Starfleet to serve in the position on the Melbourne. Though he holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander and is part of the vessel's senior staff, as a civilian recruit Dr. Zhou is not part of the Melbourne's official chain of command.

TRADIS, Nal

  • Rank: Lieutenant Junior Grade
  • Assignment: Medical Officer
  • Species: Barzan
  • Gender: Female

Lt. JG Nal Tradis is a Medical officer serving on the USS Melbourne. She is one of an increasing number of Barzan enlisted in Starfleet, despite Barzan II not yet being a member of the United Federation of Planets and Barzan being required to wear breathing apparatus to provide necessary supplementary gases in order for them to survive in standard starship atmospheres. Tradis initially worked primarily in Sick Bay but has since participated in multiple Away Team missions.
