THE MELBOURNE RULES

When Capt. Mitchell first took command of the USS Melbourne he made a point to give a speech to the crew, taking them aside in small groups. He started with the members of the "Lower Decks" and worked his way through the ranks until finally delivering it to the command staff following their first mission. This speech has come to be known as The Melbourne Rules.

There's an old abandoned mining town I'd visit in Arizona. Life was hard and the desert cut the town off from all other contact so they had to work together and take on any task regardless of race, culture, or gender. The bar near the mine had a sign on it.

There's no such thing as last call
Pick each other up when you fall
We share the same bathroom stall
Check the sign on the wall

That's how we'll get through any challenge in front of us, There's no such thing as last call. We don't stop finding solutions to challenges and we don't give up.

Pick each other up when you fall. Competition presents one winner but collaboration means we all win as a crew.

We share the same bathroom stall. I know that one sounds strange but although everyone on this crew has a job and a station, no one on this crew is superior to anyone else.

And if there's ever a day where the challenge feels too great or the odds are too much against you... Then you check that sign on the wall. You'll find what you need to get through it. Those are going to be our rules. The Melbourne Rules.
