STELLAR CARTOGRAPHY - NA-ZEK ALLIANCE

The Na-Zek Alliance is the government of the Na-Zek people, a felinoid species originating in the Alpha Quadrant almost 5,000 light years spinward of the core of Federation Space. The Na-Zek control an area of space approximately 100 light years across, centered around their homeworld of Ravaya. The Na-Zek sphere of influence does not include any other intelligent species, with all inhabited worlds being colonies of the Na-Zek themselves.

Planetary Profile

Ravaya is a mix of forest and savannah, with no large oceans but rather an interconnected network of smaller seas. Tectonic activity is low, and there are no major mountain chains. Only a handful of peaks on the planet reach above the treeline. The planet's primary is a Yellow-White star, resulting in the plant life being more purple and blue than the familiar green and yellow of Earth. The average planetary temperature is on the warmer side. The lack of oceans also means there are few major storms, with alternating wet and dry seasons that switch between the northern and southern hemispheres.

The Na-Zek build flat and wide, with few buildings over a half-dozen stories tall. The savannahs are the home of most of the planetary agriculture, while the jungle forests are left fairly wild. Hunting is a major pastime for the Na-Zek, with hunting trips into the jungles a common occurrence. Na-Zek cities tend to be established near seas or major rivers.

Na-Zek Physiology

The Na-Zek are felinoid, seemingly distantly related to the Kzinti, possibly from an ancient off-shoot colony or transplanted by beings like the Preservers. They most closely resemble Terran leopards, though the fur color tends darker, with hues in the blue and purple range to help blend in with the local flora; likely an evolutionary adaptation after they were transplanted to this world.

Government

The Na-Zek are still primarily clan-based, with a Council of Chiefs forming the planetary government. Off-world colonies are usually dominated by a single clan, so the clan Chief represents the colony as well as the clan on Ravaya itself. The Council of Chiefs is led by the Clan Chief that is victorious is a series of trials held every decade. This Chief becomes Chief of Chiefs and adopts all Na-Zek as his Clan, with his place on the Council representing his home Clan taken by a second. For the sake of diplomacy the Chief of Chiefs is referred to as Premiere. The current Chief of Chiefs is Endom Karak and he is four years into his first term as Premiere.

Senior ministers of government are called Secondaires or Deputies. The divisions of government headed by the Deputies are called Estates, and the usual divisions can be found here: Defense, Justice, Security, Agriculture, Science & Technology, etc.

The planetary capital is Mampoa City, a broad settlement reaching from the shores of an equatorial sea up into the forested hills bordering a jungle interior.

History

Details of Na-Zek history remain unknown. Genetic data points to a connection to the Kzinti, pointing to the Na-Zek not originating on Ravaya. Rather this indicates that the Na-Zek either originated as a long forgotten Kzinti colony or as a Kzinti population transplanted to Ravaya by an external party, perhaps the Preservers.

First contact with the Na-Zek happened in 2273, when the Constitution-class USS Yamato (NCC-1715) was accidentally transported to the Small Magellanic Cloud by an unknown stellar anomaly where the ship encountered vessels from several other previously unencountered species that had been transported there by the same phenomenon, including a Na-Zek starship. The Na-Zek vessel was later destroyed, but the surviving crew were taken aboard the Yamato and returned to Federation space when the Yamato was able to find a way back.

After some debate Starfleet assigned the USS Sutherland (NCC-1988), a modified Chandley-class starship, on a long range mission to transport the Na-Zek back to their space and make formal contact with their government. Due to the distances involved, it took the Sutherland almost four years to reach Na-Zek space, and the ship did not remain long before setting off on the return journey back to Federation space. In the intervening decades, contact between the Federation and the Na-Zek Alliance was limited to periodic long-range subspace transmissions that barely served to keep the lines of communication open. It is only with recent Starfleet advances in warp propulsion that the possibility of establishing permanent relations between the two governments has become feasible.

Technology

Na-Zek technology is roughly a century behind Starfleet. When first encountered in the latter half of the 23rd Century, Na-Zek vessels had weapons and engines comparable to the NX-class. Weaponry consisted of photonic torpedoes and pulsed phase cannons, with a maximum capability of Warp 5 (old Warp scale, roughly Warp 3.7 current scale). In the decades since their technology has kept pace, now roughly equaling that of Starfleet in the late 23rd Century. Their advancements have paralleled Federation developments, likely due to the exposure to Starfleet technology at the time. The exceptions are Na-Zek subspace communication and sensor technology, which is more advanced than even current Starfleet capabilities. A notable aspect is the absence of transporter and related technology (replicators, etc.), despite Na-Zek research efforts in the century since first contact with the Federation exposed them to the technology.

Culture

Descended from predators, the Na-Zek retain a hunting-centric nature. These ancient Na-Zek had lived in groups of related individuals and the modern Na-Zek culture is similar, organized into large clans of interrelated families. There are twelve primary clans, each with a number of allied smaller clans, and the chiefs of these twelve clans are the leaders of the Na-Zek planetary government. Ravaya had sufficient land so historically there was little open conflict between clans; most inter-clan competition was to establish dominance. This evolved into the present-day traditions of competing in challengers to select the planetary leader. Most leadership positions in the Na-Zek are held by males, a reality driven more by instinct rather than ability. Female Na-Zek are no less capable than the males, but the females are instinctive providers and so tend to gravitate towards support roles. In fact, while the senior leadership in both government and military spaces is predominantly male, the lower ranks in almost all fields are majority female. The exception is in the space forces, where a stronger need for large communities keeps many females from serving on all but the largest Na-Zek spacecraft.
