Rebecca Sloane comes from a jungle world that is home to an Earth colony on the frontiers of Federation space. She joined Starfleet and served during the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-57 as a lieutenant. She was instrumental in saving survivors when the vessel they were serving on was destroyed in a Klingon attack. Rebecca was expected to be fast tracked to a major command, but suffered a setback when she crossed a fellow officer who used his connections to sideline her career. She found herself given menial assignments on smaller vessels though through perseverance achieved command of a small scout vessel where Rebecca again demonstrated her skill during renewed hostilities with the Klingons. When the search was for someone to take command of the USS Yamato, Rebecca was the first candidate to accept the offer (it is unknown just how many refused because of the ship's reputation).
Rebecca's wanderlust has been dampened, but not extinguished, by her experiences in the Klingon conflicts. She sees the Yamato's 5-year mission as a way to make her mark, with the added benefit of being far enough away from Starfleet command she will not have to worry about politics and other interference. At her core, Rebecca is a survivor and will put her own survival and that of those under her command ahead of considerations for the rules and regulations of Starfleet.
Female human, North American descent with European ancestry. A woman in her mid-forties with short black hair, grey streaks beginning to show. She has mismatched eye colors, the right is blue while the left is green; there is also faint traces of scarring around the left side of her face that Federation medical technology has not been able to completely eliminate. The mismatched eye color and scars are supposedly the result of injuries sustained during the Klingon-Federation War of 2256-57. Captain Sloane prefers a duty uniform of trousers and the alternate green wraparound tunic rather than the standard gold tunic for command.
Travis Cartwright was born in the city of Boston on Earth's North American continent. His family were mostly artists, with his parents both being pioneers in new style interplanetary fusion music with roots in American Jazz. He enrolled in Starfleet Academy almost as an afterthought while trying to decide what he wanted to do with his life, but found the camaraderie enticing. Travis' showed a knack for dealing with people and his ability to relate with and find common ground among diverse groups led him into command, where he became more noted for his diplomatic skills than tactical ability. He found himself in leadership roles, though Travis was not pushing for a command of his own. He applied his family knack for improvisation and artistry into hobbies, often experimenting with holographic art forms. Travis' experimentation unintentionally led him to achieve some breakthroughs in holographic technology that Starfleet adopted and attempted to incorporate into the communication systems of newer vessels, but the tech's incompatibility with some existing systems, especially in multi-mission vessels, led them to shelve the idea until the technology could be further developed. Captain Sloane selected Travis as her first officer when she was given command of the USS Yamato, feeling his diplomatic nature and ability to relate to diverse groups made him an excellent second, and his lack of career ambitions meant she would not have to deal with an XO who was trying to make a reputation for himself and gunning for a command of his own. Commander Cartwright was killed in the third year of the Yamato's mission, giving his life to save Captain Sloane and several other officers when the bridge of the ship suffered a hull breach after encountering an unknown spatial anomaly.
Travis is easygoing and charismatic, a natural talker who prefers diplomacy to conflict. His go-to reaction to any situation is to try and de-escalate and negotiate a settlement. He is open to other points of view, sometimes to a fault, and always tries to understand his opponents. His efforts to try and please everyone often result in disastrous outcomes, but even these he takes in strides. He has an artistic bent and is a jazz fan; often playing it as he works on his holographic artwork (Travis has pioneered some holographic technologies in his efforts to produce his works).
Male human, North American descent with African ancestry. In his mid-thirties, Commander Cartwright keeps his dark wiry hair cut short and typically has a well-trimmed beard and mustache. He wears a standard duty uniform.
Sumesh Nayar was born and raised on an isolated colony founded by a fringe religious group looking for the one true God by examining the religions of the different alien races encountered by the Federation. Sumesh's family ran the trade post that supplied the colony, so he was exposed firsthand to all the races they traded with, as well as all those who came to the colony to join it. This gave him an ear for languages and also exposed him to ideas and cultures beyond his small colony home. Though his parents intended for him to take over the trading post, Sumesh instead decided to leave, desiring to experience more of the universe he was only catching glimpses of through the visitors to the colony. He elected to enlist in Starfleet Academy and became a pilot, feeling this would give him the most opportunities to see the galaxy. Sumesh's decision paid off, as he found himself assigned to exploration vessels and scouts, showing him the wonders the universe had to offer. When the chance came to serve on a Constitution class vessel starting a five-year deep space exploration mission Sumesh could not resist and he became the senior helm officer on the USS Yamato. Sadly, Sumesh was killed when the bridge of the Yamato suffered a hull breach during an encounter with an unknown spatial anomaly.
While he rejected the family business, he retains the colony's curiosity and belief that all life forms share the same kinds of souls. He is very open minded and friendly, always seeking to incorporate the beliefs of others. His encounter with a strange alien being has further reinforced his belief in the infinite possibilities in the universe and that there is a one true God somewhere.
Male human, Indian sub-continent descent. A lanky man in his mid-twenties, Sumesh has mid-length hair he keeps cut in regulation style. He wears a standard command duty uniform but adorns it with a pendant representing his colony's religion.
La'shana (Shana for short), referred to as Commander Ares, was born and raised on Mars where her father was an engineer at the Utopia Planitia shipyard (her Familial-Location name derives from this). Shana followed in her father's footsteps, enrolling at Starfleet Academy in the Engineering track. She proved an excellent student, her meticulous nature leading her to study all forms of technology used in a starship. After graduation one of her early assignments was as an engineer on a scout vessel and during a visit to a remote Rigellian colony Shana was instrumental in repairing the colony's life support systems, leading to be celebrated by the Jelna people there and becoming immersed in their culture. She continued to serve on Starfleet vessels, rising to senior engineering rolls until finally Shana was offered the chance to serve as Chief Engineer on a Constitution class vessel, the USS Yamato. As a senior officer with the training and some command experience, Shana would be the obvious choice to replace the late Commander Cartwright as First Officer on the Yamato, but with the ship stranded far from home with less than optimal crew strength Captain Sloane has opted to keep Shana focused in her role of Chief Engineer where she can be of the most use in the crisis.
Shana has an eye for detail, and can pick apart anything from an engine to an argument. Her early exposure to multiple species and cultures has given her a taste for variety. She can be a perfectionist, and likes to run a tight ship in engineering. Her experience with the Jelna culture has led her to have an open mind on sexuality and generally considers herself to be omnisexual.
Female Tellarite, Lt. Commander Ares has a curvy build, lither than normal for a Tellarite due to being raised in a lower gravity environment than typical for her species. She has a tan complexion, petite nose, and is known to wear her long, black hair in a variety of styles. She typically wears a skirt uniform unless performing "greasework", when she will switch to the standard trousers and tunic duty uniform or an engineering jumpsuit.
Anthony Chen was born into science. His parents are both science officers in Starfleet and he was born and raised on starships and Starbases across the Federation. Anthony entered Starfleet Academy in the science track and after graduation was assigned to a series of Science vessels. He gradually rose in rank by virtue of his scientific research until his assignment as Chief Science Officer of the USS Yamato. Even here Lt. Commander Chen has chosen to focus on his research, seeing the Yamato as merely another Science vessel. Anthony suffered a severe head injury when the bridge of the Yamato suffered a hull breach during an encounter with an unknown spatial phenomenon. He has been replaced as Science Officer by Lt. Drake until he has recovered enough to resume his duties.
Chen's belief in science is bordering on religious and at the Academy he specialized in multi-dimensional physics, the 23rd Century versions of String Theory and higher level mathematics. His research is paramount, often to the detriment of any social skills and he will only talk about his research or the latest scientific theories. He leaves the day-to-day running of the Science departments onboard the ship to his subordinates.
Male human, Chinese descent. A man in his late thirties, Lt. Commander Chen keep his dark hair buzzed short. He wears a standard duty uniform.
Dashykeorn generally prefers the crew to call him by a shorted form of his name, "Dash" (or more typically "Doctor Dash"). Dash's mother was a member of the ambassadorial staff of the Edosian Embassy to Tellar and Dash was born and spent part of his childhood on Tellar Prime. Doctor Dash rejected his family's diplomatic calling and instead studied science and medicine at Starfleet Academy. After graduating he served on a succession of different vessels, including as a medical researcher on a survey ship. On that assignment Dash was part of the team analyzing fragments of advanced medical technology recovered from the ruins on a long-dead planet. Dash's experience continued to grow as the exploration missions exposed him to many unknown technologies and newly discovered alien species. This experience made him an ideal candidate for the position of Chief Medical Officer of the USS Yamato, an assignment that has continued to provide Dash with the chance to examine new forms of life.
Dash is fascinated by all lifeforms, and has a saying that everyone looks the same on the inside. Dash is fascinated with the possibilities of discovering and studying new forms of life that come with the Yamato's 5-year mission. He is friendly, but often takes the slow route due to the long-lived nature of Edosians. Dash is sometimes thought to be a perfectionist, but really he just likes to take his time on a task to make sure it is done correctly.
Male Edosian. The three-armed, three-legged Edosian is in his mid-sixties, relatively young for his long-lived species. He typically wears a short-sleeved medical tunic, and often has a round-lensed pince-nez (which sits too low on his long snout to actually function as an actual pair of glasses).
Zandr was born on a heavy gravity Denobulan colony world. Zandr's second father was deputy governor of the colony and his third mother served two terms as mayor of his hometown, making politics a frequent aspect of his upbringing. As the youngest child of his extended family, Zandr decided to seek out a new social environment and left to join Starfleet. There he found a large, ever-shifting group of friends and colleagues, which Zandr revelled in. He also found he liked the structure provided by Starfleet, even finding a strange pleasure in mastering how to navigate the maze of regulations and protocols. Zandr's outgoing nature and knowledge of protocols led Zandr into Communications. His knowledge of the rules in Starfleet caused Zandr some trouble when he called out a superior officer for violating regulations, but this was not enough of a setback to prevent the Denobulan from being assigned to the USS Yamato as the Senior Communications Officer; though given the Yamato's alleged reputation perhaps someone in Starfleet saw it as a form of punishment for the lieutenant.
Zandr is a bit of a dichotomy. He is a believer in the rules, but also in second chances. He has become more flexible, but still sees upholding regulations as a key value. Zandr tends to adopt the crew of whatever ship he serves on as his surrogate family and he takes the role of helpful and supportive uncle towards any who will accept this. He is a master of diplomacy and bureaucracy and has become adept at navigating red tape no matter where it is encountered.
Male Denobulan. Zandr is slightly shorter and stockier than average for a Denobulan due to the higher gravity on the colony world he comes from. He wears a standard duty uniform.
Siana Na-Drade was born in Amroth, one of the cultural centers on the ice world of Efros. On Efros music is the preeminent art form and Siana's family were well known musicians and as a child she would often participate in their performances. Seeking to make a name for herself away from her family Siana enrolled in Starfleet Academy, it being the easiest way to get off-planet. Naturally athletic, Siana participated in team sports and her physical prowess drew her towards Security. Immediately after graduation Siana briefly saw action near the end of the Federation-Klingon War, her performance in combat showing her gift for field leadership and tactics even this early in her career. Subsequent assignments gave Siana plenty more opportunities to hone her skills and prove her ability. Her insights from front-line actions have led to Starfleet adopting new small-unit tactics and implementing enhancements to the standard-issue hand phasers. When the opportunity to be Security Chief on a Constitution class cruiser came up, Siana fought hard to win the assignment on the USS Yamato. She knew being on the frontier would give her plenty of opportunities to prove herself, and she was not wrong.
Siana comes from a musical family, and still considers music to be an integral part of her life (she has taken an interest in Earth Jazz after being introduced to it by Commander Cartwright). She is bold and a bit of a risk taker, but prefers to work in groups while often taking the lead.
Female Efrosian. Tall and muscular, with a red-brown complexion, those unfamiliar with Efrosians may initially mistake Lt. Commander Na-Drade for a Klingon, but Efrosian cranial ridges are much less pronounced than Klingon and only cover the forehead. Like most Efrosians, Lt. Commander Na-Drade has long, white hair that runs down to her waist that she will usually wear braided on missions. She wears the standard trousers and tunic duty uniform.
