Southern Cross Who's Who - William "Cavalier" Hardy

Personality

William Hardy has a haughty, aristocratic demeanor. He is rude, suspicious and tends to appear rather imposing. He considers himself naturally superior to his teammates and does not try and hide this opinion. His past tragedies have hardened him and he is generally morose. His attitude of getting what he thinks is owed him leads him to be very greedy and possessive, and if he wants something, or someone, he will attempt to take it, thinking it is his by right.

Biography

Hardy comes from a wealthy, well-connected family. His family also has a strong military tradition and William entered the Southern Cross on the fast track to becoming an officer. While he was at the academy his parents were killed, allegedly in an accident, but shortly afterward his brother and sister vanished with much of the family inheritance. With no fortune to fall back on, William was still able to leverage family connections to help him gain his commission.

William's command went well enough, though he was not popular among his subordinates, or even many of his peers. His lack of true command ability resulted in a live fire training accident that killed many men in his squadron. He was very nearly court martialled but he used the last of his family influence to stave this off. In the end he was demoted to Corporal and assigned to the 21st.

Hardy resents his current predicament and wants what he believes is his due, namely the restoration of his wealth as well as his officer's commission and command. He recently learned some valuable information from a black market contact, information that may lead him to his missing siblings and the stolen inheritance.

Update: With help from two new teammates (Mark Andrews and Victor Chen), William was able to steal back a large sum of money from his siblings, Thomas and Sarah, and in the process Thomas was killed. William has used some of the money to assist in regaining his officer's commission. The rest of the money is being laundered by Andrews.

Update: Near the end of the Second Robotech War, William found himself in command of the 21st ATAC after Captain Mace was thrown in the stockade for assaulting a superior officer. Though pleased to be in charge, William found that he did not have the respect of the rest of the squadron and they only barely tolerated his command. His efforts to ingratiate himself with Dundee Base's new commanding officer failed when the whole 21st was brought in for questioning. GMP investigators had uncovered his inheritance money and learned how he obtained it (a horrified Cavalier realized he had been betrayed by Andrews).

Fortunately, or unfortunately given the final outcome, none of the squadron were actually charged with anything and, given the desperate need of troops to battle the Robotech Masters, they were released. This included Captain Mace, taking back command of the squadron from Cavalier. When the Captain prepared to take the squadron on what by all appearances would be a suicide mission, William took his hovertank and fled while the others were battling a group of Bioroids. Unfortunately for him a special forces operative spotted the attempted desertion and summarily executed Cavalier on the spot with a well-placed sniper shot to the head.

Call Sign: Hardy was given his call sign because of his uncaring, or cavalier, attitude towards his fellow soldiers and subordinates.
