Fort Gibson

One of the last three major Robotech Defense Force bases left on Earth, this base was set up when the Southern Cross took control of the primary UEDF base in the region (now Dundee Base). Fort Gibson has a large contingent of Veritechs and Destroids, but these are mostly older models (there are a few REF mecha, but not enough to form full squadrons so most are assigned as part of existing squadrons). The Fort has a strong rivalry going with nearby Dundee Base and troops on leave from both locations often get into fights in the nearby city of Gibson, which lies halfway between the bases.

Location

Fort Gibson is located close to the northeastern border of Western Australia, west of the old Purnululu National Park and just off of the New Victoria Highway.

Description

Fort Gibson is the smallest of the three remaining RDF bases, due mostly to its proximity to the much larger Southern Cross Dundee Base. The base appears on the surface to only consist of four buildings, but in reality the majority of the base is housed in an underground complex connect to the surface buildings. The base has no fighter aircraft so it has no airfield, Veritech fighters take off and land in guardian mode. Other mecha enter and exit via the main above ground mecha hangar (built into a hillside) or via one of three auxiliary mecha access points that contain secure elevators to the underground complex.

History

When the Southern Cross assumed primary responsibility for Earth's defense they took control of RDF Australia Base, renaming it Dundee Base. The remaining RDF forces in the region were transferred to a new base a few hundred kilometers away, built expressly for their use. Generally the base saw little activity beyond patrols of the Australian wastelands and Outback.

Activity eventually picked up with the outbreak of the Second Global Civil War (aka World War IV). Mecha forces from Fort Gibson were mobilized, frequently alongside forces from Dundee Base or Perth. The base suffered a hit to its reputation when a handful of its personnel were revealed to be NWO agents during the war's aftermath. Even so many of the other members of the RDF from the base still maintained good relations with the other branches of the United Earth Defense Forces. One primary example was one of the Fort Gibson's veteran Destroid squadrons, the 89th, aka the Boomers, who were frequently paired with Dundee Base's 21st A.T.A.C. for missions.

At the start of the Second Robotech War, Fort Gibson came under heavy attack by the forces of the Robotech Masters and paid a heavy price to repel the attacks on many occasions. Only a few months into the war the base was completely destroyed by a laser bombardment from a Robotech Masters Heavy Cruiser, killing all the remaining personnel instantly. To add insult to the base's tragic demise the Cruiser then settled into the ruins and the Robotech Masters used it as a staging area for further attacks around the region. Several attempts were made by Southern Cross forces from Dundee Base to drive off the Cruiser but in the end the vessel left of its own volition - to rendezvous with its parent mothership at nearby Wolfe Creek Crater.
