The New Adventurers

The New Adventurers are a team of super-heroes based in Superior City. Named for the original Adventurers, a Golden-Age team of heroes that operated in Superior during the 1940s, the New Adventurers formed when Cooper McBride, the second Renegade, summoned several heroes together to combat the Enforcers of Justice, who had apparently turned evil. In the end it turned out to be the Enforcers of Injustice posing as the heroic team, and the New Adventurers assisted the real Enforcers of Justice in capturing their evil counterparts. Afterward the heroes decided to remain together as a team, choosing to call themselves the New Adventurers in honor of the man who had brought them together.

Since its creation, the team of the New Adventurers has fought to protect Superior City against several menaces both on their own and alongside the Enforcers of Justice. The team's roster still consists of its founding members.

Patriot

PATRIOT

  • Name: Michael Yee/Li Jian Jie
  • Occupation: Hero
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: unnamed brother, deceased

History:

Li Jian Jie's older brother was a brilliant engineer working at Beijing University, and had been a loyal communist until he witnessed the massacre of pro-democracy protesters by government troops at Tiananmen Square in 1989. Li's brother joined the dissident movement, but eventually came to fear for the safety of his family due to his actions. He contacted the American government and offered them plans to a new personal weapons system he had designed in exchange for his family being taken to the United States. The Americans sent a C.B.I. agent to bring them, and the weapon prototype, out of China but the Chinese authorities learned of the plan. In the end only Li and the agent made it out alive.

Honoring their side of the bargain the American authorities gave Li a new life and identity in the U.S., despite the fact that Li's brother was dead and the secret of his weapons system appeared to have died with him. Li, now Michael Yee, eventually settled in Superior City where he opened a martial arts school catering to teenagers. Two of his students were Erica Corbett (see Rocket below) and Alicia Uchida (secretly the hero Orchid).

The Chinese government, hoping to recover the lost weapons system, eventually tracked Michael down and sent agents to kidnap him. They captured Michael while he and his students were at a martial arts competition in Seattle, but he was rescued by Erica and Alicia. The Chinese government then dispatched China Force, a team of superhuman agents already in the U.S., to recover the weapons system. This team was in Superior City secretly tracking a group of criminals involved in smuggling illegal immigrants into America. Erica and Alicia were again able to rescue Michael, this time with the help of the hero team Vigil. China Force were defeated and fled back to China and the smugglers were captured. The latest group of illegal Chinese immigrants were quietly sent back to China by the U.S. government to prevent any major diplomatic incidents during negotiations between the two nations. This angered Michael, who knew what the immigrants would face once they were returned home.

Not after the incident with China Force the hero team Vigil were brutally murdered by the Enforcers of Injustice. Of all of the heroes, Patriot was the only one to escape, though he was mortally wounded. Michael found the dying hero and brought him to Cooper McBride's store, where Erica worked part-time, but the three were unable to save him. At Erica's urging Michael donned the dead hero's costume, to which he also added his brother's weapons system (which had been in his possession all along - Michael had not wanted it to be his brother's only legacy and had decided not to turn it over to the C.B.I. agent). Michael became the new Patriot and along with Erica (in a costume of her own and calling herself Rocket) he joined with the other founding members of the New Adventurers to help track down and capture the Enforcers of Injustice. Afterward Michael met the hero Vanguard, who had been the original Patriot. Vanguard gave Michael his blessing to continue using the Patriot identity to protect Superior City. Since then Michael has fought many battles on his own, alongside Rocket, and with the rest of the New Adventurers.

Powers and Abilities:

Patriot is a master of Wing Chun Kung Fu, having been trained in the art from childhood by his great-uncle. He also received more modern combat training while still in China, training which was reinforced by his own disciplined skills. The Patriot costume is armored enough to provide protection against all but the heaviest caliber of firearms and is equipped with the unique weapons systems developed by Michael's brother: a pair of lightweight gauntlets capable of generating force shields and firing devastating plasma blasts. Patriot has also been known to drive a customized Kawasaki motorcycle.

Rocket ROCKET
  • Name: Erica Corbett
  • Occupation: Student
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: Andrew Corbett (father)

History:

Eric Corbett is the only child of Andrew Corbett, head of the Superior City Police Department's Special Anti-Terrorism Unit and a vocal opponent of costumed vigilantes. Despite, or perhaps because of, her father's opposition to them Erica developed a keen interest in super-heroes. When she was old enough she even took a part-time job at Second-Hand Memories, an antique store specializing in super-hero memorabilia. The curious, and highly intelligent, Erica eventually discovered that the store's owner, Cooper McBride, had been a super-hero once himself; which only served to pique her curiosity further. She began secretly borrowing her father's police training manuals and joined a martial arts dojo in order to train to become a super-hero herself.

When her sensei at the dojo, Michael Yee (see Patriot above), was kidnapped she and a fellow student, Alicia Uchida, rescued him. When Michael again came under attack, this time by super-powered villains, Erica raided Cooper's secret store of memorabilia, which consisted of original weapons and other gadgets belonging to heroes from the 1940s. Thus equipped, and again with the help of Alicia (who was secretly Orchid of the Enforcers of Justice), Erica helped the hero team Vigil defeat the villains and rescue Michael. When the second Patriot was killed, it was Erica that encouraged Michael to become the new Patriot and she joined him in her own costume calling herself Rocket (a name she had been called by one of the members of Vigil). Together with Patriot and the other founding members of the New Adventurers she helped capture the Enforcers of Injustice. She is still a member of the New Adventurers today.

With the recent destruction of Second-Hand Memories, Erica is now employed at Cooper McBride's new store, a franchise of the popular Warriors restaurant. She also attends classes at the Superior City Academy, but it remains to be seen whether or not Rocket will be seen at the school.

Powers and Abilities:

Rocket does not possess any super-powers but is a skilled athlete and has earned a black-belt in Kung Fu under the tutelage of Patriot. She has also developed keen detective skills thanks to her own intelligence and her study of police training manuals. In action she wears a bullet-proof costume and carries a range of equipment, much of which is based on gadgets used by heroes in the past. Her most notable pieces of equipment are a pair of roller-blades, an updated design based on the skates used by the original Air Wave to travel by running along power and telephone cables; smoke grenades based on the original Dr. Mid-Nite's Blackout Bombs; and her "Stars and Stripes", the stars being specially design shuriken and the stripes being high tensile strength steel cables she uses to entangle opponents. Rocket also possesses an uncanny knowledge of super-hero trivia.

Twilight

TWILIGHT

  • Name: Scott Cohen
  • Occupation: Research Scientist
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: none

History:

Scott Cohen was a physicist working at the west-coast compound of the Banzai Institute during the Enforcers of Justice's battle with the Ultra-Humanite. While trying to examine the mysterious "Globe of Darkness" that had covered the city Cohen came under attack by an unknown form of dark magical energy coming from the Globe. The Enforcer ArcAngel was able to fend off the attacking energy, in the process unknowingly tapping into her own latent mystical energies. Cohen was saved, and was apparently unharmed.

A short time later Cohen realized that the attack had not left him unaffected. He discovered that he had somehow become infused with both the dark mystical energy that had attacked him and the light mystical energy from ArcAngel. He found that when manifesting the powers he would become clothed in a strange costume, one that was black on the right side and white on the left. With his new abilities Cohen began fighting crime in Superior City. Early reports on the new vigilante led police to name him "Twilight" and the name stuck. Twilight was one of the heroes summoned by Cooper McBride to fight the Enforcers of Injustice and he became one of the founding members of the New Adventurers.

Since the destruction of the Banzai Institute's west-coast operation doing Superior City, Cohen has gone to work for the Superior City branch of S.T.A.R. Labs doing research in theoretical mathematics. Recently the enigmatic hero Harbinger told Twilight that he is a conduit for the powers of both Light and Darkness and will play an important role in the coming war between the armies of these two mystical forces.

Powers and Abilities:

Twilight is able to project both darkness and light. His darkness can blanket large areas in total blackness or can be concentrated into a powerful beam of darkness energy. This darkness beam seems to cause an effect that is described as being both freezing and burning at the same time. With his Light power Twilight can illuminate a large area, even to a degree that all around him are blinded or he can concentrate the Light into an intense beam, much like a laser. When using his powers Twilight's costume is always present.

On a few cases Twilight has shown the ability to sense other powerful sources of Light and Darkness energy. When in the presence of these forces his own powers change, with one becoming weaker and the other stronger. For example, when he entered a pit containing concentrated Darkness energy his own darkness powers faded while his light powers grew. His costume also changed, with the white (left) half extending to encompass the black (right) portion. Harbinger called this effect the Grey Force and believes it to represent a mystical balance between the Darkness and the Light.

Chrysalis

CHRYSALIS

  • Name: Kathryn Davis
  • Occupation: Scientist
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: none

History:

As a graduate student Kathryn Davis stumbled across a set of mysterious research notes, apparently belonging to the 1960s hero called Elixir. The notes described some of the details on how Elixir created the alchemical potions that gave him his various powers. Kathryn began studying the formulas in her spare time in the hopes of duplicating them. Years later Kathryn, now a researcher at S.T.A.R. Labs in Superior City, was able to create her own alchemical potion which she named the Chrysalis Formula.

Before Kathryn had a chance to fully test her new creation she found herself caught in the middle of a battle between the Enforcers of Justice and the villainous Forces of Nature. One of the villains caused an earthquake that threatened to destroy the shopping center Kathryn was in. She used the untested formula on herself and gained super-powers. She was able to help another metahuman, John Ashes (see G-Force below), to stop the building from collapsing, saving the people inside. The two new heroes then left the scene before anyone could get a good look at their faces. Both decided to adopt heroic identities and continue using their powers. Kathryn, calling herself Chrysalis, soon became one of the founding members of the New Adventurers and has been with the team ever since.

Powers and Abilities:

Kathryn is an accomplished chemist and biologist. When she uses the Chrysalis Formula she gains complete control over her molecular density. This allows her to increase her muscle and bone density, granting her superhuman strength and resistance to injury. Chrysalis can also increase and decrease her mass, making herself heavier or lighter, and she can even expand and contract her molecular structure, which lets her grow to over twenty feet high or shrink to the size of a small insect.

Chrysalis wears a pair of goggles of her own design equipped with advanced optic systems including thermal and night-vision, x-ray vision, and a powerful microscope. Kathryn is nearsighted so the goggles are also designed to serve as prescription lenses.

G-Force

G-FORCE

  • Name: John Ashes
  • Occupation: Reporter
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: Richard Browning (Atomsmasher, cousin)

History:

John Ashes is a reporter for the Superior City Tribune, one of the city's more popular newspapers. He is also a mutant, a metahuman whose powers developed on their own. He has had metahuman abilities since his late teens but only began using them in public recently. His public debut was at the Metroplex, a massive shopping complex in the heart of downtown Superior City. When Tremor, one of the villainous Forces of Nature, tried to destroy the building with an earthquake John used his powers to keep the Metroplex from collapsing. With the help of another would-be-hero, Kathryn Davis (see Chrysalis above), he was able to save the building. The two fled before they could be recognized and both decided to create heroic identities. John chose the name G-Force, because of his gravity-based powers, and he later became one of the founding members of the New Adventurers.

G-Force is the member of the New Adventurers that has had the most contact with the Enforcers of Justice. He has helped them on several missions and even learned some of their secret identities.

Powers and Abilities:

G-Force is a mutant with the ability to control gravity and even the earth itself. He can increase or decrease the gravity in an area, or even on just a single person or object. By using it on himself he can fly at supersonic speeds. With his earth control he can shift large volumes of rock and dirt, using it to attack or grapple a foe, or to tunnel through the ground or generate earthquakes. G-Force also possesses superhuman strength and resistance to injury.

Nightmare

NIGHTMARE

  • Name: Paul Maxwell
  • Occupation: Trauma Surgeon
  • Group Affiliation: New Adventurers
  • Base of Operations: Superior City
  • Known Relatives: none

History:

Nightmare has no knowledge of his past or his true identity. He knows his powers were given to him in an illegal experiment conducted by the Parapsychological Studies Institute and he and several other experimental subjects escaped. Nightmare himself has no memory of these events, but learned about his connection to P.S.I. recently. His memory, and that of the other test subjects, was erased somehow during the escape. His own memories start sometime after the escape, when he awoke in a train station in San Francisco. With no memory and strange powers Nightmare slowly built a new life for himself. Realizing he had medical skills he used his abilities to forge an identity for himself as Paul Maxwell, a doctor who had lost everything in the destruction of nearby Coast City. He relocated to Pacific City and started his new life.

As he settled into his new life, Nightmare tried to think of a way to use his powers to help people, but he didn't want to use them in public. Ever since awakening in the train station he'd had the feeling that someone or something was looking for him and if he used his powers in public his pursuers would be able to find him. Eventually he figured out a way to use his powers publicly but without tipping off any pursuers. Using costuming equipment from movie studios and electronics from hobby stores Nightmare built himself a costume that looked like a suit of power armor. He began fighting crime at night in Pacific City, claiming to be "a criminal's worst nightmare", all the while acting as though his powers came from his costume.

Eventually Nightmare's fear of his pursuers, real or imaginary, led him to leave Pacific City. As Dr. Maxwell he transferred to Superior City, where he became a surgeon at the Superior City University Hospital's Trauma Center. Shortly afterward Nightmare made his first appearance fighting crime in the city. Nightmare was one of the heroes summoned by Cooper McBride to fight the Enforcers of Injustice and became one of the founding members of the New Adventurers. While working at the hospital Dr. Maxwell met a medical student named Alicia Uchida, who was secretly Orchid of the Enforcers of Justice. He immediately felt a connection to her and the two became friends. They later learned that Alicia had also gained her powers as a result of P.S.I.'s experiments.

When Nightmare's costume was destroyed and he was badly wounded in battle it was Alicia that saved his life when the other doctors at the Trauma Center had given up. While he recovered Alicia built him a real suit of power armor to replace his old one. It was during this recovery period that he and Alicia discovered their shared history at P.S.I. and exposed that organization's illegal experiments. Though left with some lasting after-effects of his injuries, Nightmare still regularly patrols Superior City and defends it on his own and as a member of the New Adventurers.

Powers and Abilities:

Thanks to P.S.I.'s experiment Nightmare has a range of psychic abilities. His most notable power is his telekinesis. With it he can fly at supersonic speeds, surround himself and others with powerful force fields, deflect incoming attacks and lift several tons. He also has limited telepathic abilities, enabling him to communicate mentally, but only with other psychics; and he can hypnotize opponents, but only if he makes eye contact with them and the effort is strenuous and often gives Nightmare headaches and nosebleeds. Nightmare also recently gained the ability to mentally trigger a subject's fear reflexes, crippling even the most strong-willed opponents by confronting them with their worst nightmares. When he was temporarily blinded because of his traumatic injuries Nightmare's telepathic powers gave him the ability to see his surroundings, and even see remote locations, but this ability disappeared when he recovered his natural sight. When in combat Nightmare always attributes his powers to his costume.

The suit of armor designed by Orchid that Nightmare uses is made of lightweight but durable steel and contains servos and artificial musculature that increases Nightmare's strength and compensates for his crippled leg. The suit also has a communications array built in and the visor is designed with telescopic vision.
