Divergent Series - Wonder Woman: Titanomachy
The Titanomachy is a Wonder Woman event unique to the DC Heroes Rebirth continuity and establishes several key elements to the Wonder Woman Family. The story takes place close to the start of the new DC Heroes Rebirth campaign and involves the Titans of Myth waging war against the gods of Olympus.
Wonder Woman: Titanomachy
Deep in the underworld realm of Tartarus, the imprisoned Titans of Myth are contacted by the eldest Titan and former king of the gods, Cronus, whom they believed had been destroyed. Encouraged by Cronus, the Titans plot to escape Tartarus and conquer Olympus, taking back their place as the ruling gods. Thia is able to reach out and rekindle the spark of divinity in her daughter, Lilith Clay (aka Omen), whose memory of her divine heritage had been erased. Under control of the Titans, Lilith is able to extend that control to her teammate Donna Troy, another person connected to the Titans of Myth.
Donna and Lilith travel to Themyscira where they overpower the Amazons guarding Doom's Doorway and open the portal to Tartarus. The Titans emerge at the head of an army of monsters, including Typhon, the Gigantes, Cyclopes and Hecatonchires alongside many other mythical creatures that had been imprisoned in Tartarus. Taking Donna and Lilith with them, the Titans and their army rise up to Olympus and begin their assault.
Queen Hippolyta rallies the Amazons to deal with the crisis. Wonder Woman arrives with both Wonder Girls, Cassie Sandsmark and Yara Flor, and they join Artemis and Fury (Helena Kosmatos), who were already on Themyscira. The Amazons are split into two groups, one to defend Doom's Doorway and prevent any more monsters from escaping and one to head to Olympus. Artemis is placed in charge of the group defending the Doorway, which also includes Fury and Yara Flor. The other group is led by Queen Hippolyta and includes Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark).
Wonder Woman and the Amazons reach Olympus to find that the Titans and their army have already breached the gates. They join the battle in Olympus itself, fighting alongside the gods and their servants. In the all-out battle everyone has been pressed into service, even young Lyta Milton, the demigoddess child of the witch Circe and Ares, the god of war, who had once lived on Themyscira before her father had brought her to Olympus. Wonder Woman charges Cassie with keeping an eye on Lyta while she heads for the front lines in the hopes of finding Donna Troy.
Back at Doom's Doorway, the Amazons are fighting a pitched battle of their own, holding the line against the hordes of creatures seeking to escape out into the mortal world. Thanks to Artemis, Fury, and Yara they are not only keeping the enemy at bay but are actually slowly driving them back to the underworld. Just when it appears that Amazons might be able to force their foes back enough to close the Doorway, the enemy surges as waves of reinforcements emerge from the depths. The Amazons are horrified when they realize that many of the new combatants are revenants, dead warriors returned on the side of the malevolent forces that are seeking to breach the Doorway. Soon they make an even more horrific discovery when they recognize some of the newcomers as their own sisters, Amazons who only just left with Queen Hippolyta for Olympus; their own recently fallen are returning as their enemy!
Up in the heavens, the god of the underworld, Hades, whom Zeus had summoned to help with the defense of Olympus, receives a warning from his psychopomp Charon telling him of the rising of dead warriors. In the forefront of the battle, Wonder Woman has located Donna Troy. Troy, still under the influence of the Titans, is proving to be the equal of her sister. The standoff between the two is only ended when Wonder Woman is able to use her Lasso of Truth to break the Titans' hold on Donna. With their champion turned against them, the Titans fear the tide of battle may also soon turn, so they set their monstrous army a new task, destroying Olympus. Just then, Lilith received a prophetic vision which reveals to her that the being that first rallied the Titans to this new cause was not their brethren Cronus but in fact Tartarus, the primordial god of the underworld for whom their former prison realm was named.
Down in Doom's Doorway, Tartarus reveals himself, having gained enough power from the slaughter in Olympus to free himself from his prison in the deepest depths of his namesake. Their true enemy revealed, the Amazons are on the verge of losing hope. Artemis attempts to rally them while Fury and Yara stand fast against the rising tide of the enemy. Yara herself shows her stubbornness and ferocity as she launches herself into the middle of the opposing forces, sending foes flying left and right. Even this does little to help as Tartarus advances along with his forces. The Amazons do gain a surprise ally, however, when their long-vanished champion Nu'bia emerges, cutting a path through the horde as she makes her own way up from the underworld. Standing side-by-side with Artemis she helps rally the Amazons and they redouble their efforts.
Back in Olympus, the Titans are horrified to learn how they were manipulated. They attempt to call off the attack, but Typhon, father of monsters and child of Tartarus, reveals that it knew all along and takes command of the monstrous army. The Titans side with the gods of Olympus to fight their now common enemy, though the odds are not in their favor. It is Wonder Woman and Donna Troy who turn the tide, when they are able to work together to slay Typhon and cast its body down from Mount Olympus. With their leader dead, the rest of the creatures fall into disarray and are soon driven out of Olympus and back down to the pits of Hades.
With their battle done, the Olympians, Titans and Amazons all descend to Themyscira to join the fight against Tartarus at Doom's Doorway. The Olympians and Titans combine their power to combat Tartarus, while the combined forces of the Amazons, bolstered by the presence of all their champions, battle the army of the underworld. Even at their new strength, victory is not assured. With Tartarus continuing to raise each newly fallen Amazon to his side, the enemy's ranks are being replenished even as the Amazons' are depleted.
It is Lilith, now also freed from the Titans' sway, who helps turn the tide. With help from Lyta, who uses her innate magic to bolster her powers, Lilith is able to free the undead Amazon warriors from Tartarus' spell. Now joined by their fallen sisters, the Amazons are at last able to drive the enemy back down into the pits of Tartarus. On the godly front, the Titans and Olympians have also managed to force Tartarus back as well. With Tartarus back in his prison, the Titans vow to atone for their mistake by keeping guard on the primordial god. With victory attained, the Amazons are finally able to reseal Doom's Doorway.
Though they mourn their dead, the Amazons are assured by Hades that all of their fallen sisters have been granted passage to the Elysian Fields. The Olympian goddesses renew their blessings on the Amazons and Themyscira, and even Zeus praises and thanks them, even implying his previous doubts of their role may have been wrong. As thanks for her role, and despite Ares' objections, Zeus also allows Lyta to return to living on Themyscira, stating that the young girl has more than proven her ability to protect herself. With that the gods take their leave and return to Olympus.
The Amazons now throw a feast to celebrate their victory. Donna Troy and Lilith both feel guilty for their role, but Queen Hippolyta declares they have nothing to be ashamed of as there are few present who can claim to have not been tricked by a god. Diana echoes her mother's statement, and points out that without the two of them they could not have achieved their victory. She goes even further with Donna, pointing out that she has proved herself Diana's equal. With that she presents Donna with a new costume and declares that it is long since time that she accepted the mantle of Wonder Woman, a name Diana is more than happy to share with her sister.
Elsewhere in the celebrations, Fury is speaking with Yara Flor. Having seen the young woman in battle, Helena feels that Yara is easily worthy of the Fury name herself. Never a fan of being saddled with the Wonder Girl name by Diana, the 21 year old Yara is more than happy to be called Fury and sits with Helena to hear stories of her adventures. Hippolyta is overjoyed to see Nu'bia again after so long a time, and welcomes her to stay among her sisters again, an invitation Nu'bia decides to accept, for a time at least.
