DIMENSIONAL TRAVEL GUIDE

Beyond the Earthly Plane are a myriad of other dimensions, some close at hand and some far afield. Some of these are the mythical abodes of gods and devils, others to magical beings and creatures, and still others are realms of science and order.

THE INNER WORLDS

The Inner Worlds are those that lie just adjacent to the Earthly Plane, close enough that some can be crossed into without the traveler realizing they have left their own universe.

  1. Fourth World: The Fourth World is the home to the New Gods and the twin worlds of New Genesis and Apokalips. The Fourth World intersects with the Earthly Plane and New Genesis and Apokalips can sometimes appear to exist within the universe.
  2. Bgztl: Home to 30th Century Legionnaire Phantom Girl, Bgztl occupies the same space as Earth but on a higher dimensional plane.
  3. The Controllers' Dimension: When the Controllers split from the Guardians of the Universe they set themselves up in an adjacent dimension from which to guide their new crusade against evil.
  4. Darkworld: One of the sources of magic in the Earthly plane, the Darkworld was also the birth-place of the immortal Atlantean mage Arion.
  5. The Hidden Land: This is the home of the homo magi, a magic wielding branch of humanity that fled to preserve their way of life. The mother of Justice League magician Zatanna was from the Hidden Land.
  6. Mera's World: The proper name of this otherdimensional world is not known. It is the location of an undersea civilization that is home to Queen Mera of Atlantis, wife of Aquaman, which led to it being known in the Earthly plane simply as Mera's World.
  7. Themyscira: Also known as Paradise Island, it exists in a pocket dimension created by the gods to protect its inhabitants, the Amazons. The access to the island is hidden in the Atlantic Ocean, concealed by the phenomenon known as the Bermuda Triangle. At different points in time Themyscira has been made accessible to the world at large.
  8. Skartaris: Sometimes mistaken as the Hollow Earth, Skartaris actually exists in another dimen-sion. It can be accessed from Earth through hidden entrances at the North and South Poles, hence the belief that it lies within the Earth itself. It is a land of magic, sorcery and long-lost beasts and is home to Travis Morgan, the Warlord.

THE OUTER DIMENSIONS

The Outer Dimensions are still close to the Earthly plane and normal people can sometimes unintentionally cross over.

The Green

The Green is an ethereal realm that is connected to all plant life in the universe. Those in tune with nature, like the plant elemental Swamp Thing, can enter the Green from nearly anywhere with sufficient plant life.

Elemental Planes

The Elemental Planes are sister realms to the Green, and echo the classical elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Some consider the Green to be the same as the Earth plane, others say the Green sits at the intersection of Earth and Water. The Elemental Planes are the source of power of the Elemental beings that manifest on the Earthly plane.

Astral Plane

The Astral Plane is a formless void that is traveled by those who can separate their spirit from their body. It is also home to monsters that can sometimes cross over to the Earthly Plane.

Shadow Realm

Also known as the Shadowlands, this is a dimension of pure darkness. It is also sometimes considered an Elemental Plane, and it is the source of power for beings like Ian Karkull, Obsidian, and the Shade. The hero Shadow Walker uses the Shadow Realm as a means of teleportation.

Dream Dimension

The home of Dream of the Endless, the Dream Dimension is where all sentient beings travel to dream. Within this realm can be found all the hopes and dreams, and fears and nightmares, of humanity.

Quantum Field

The Quantum Field is a dimension of matter and energy tied to the underlying essence of the cosmos. It is the source of power of the hero Captain Atom and his nemesis Major Force.

Cyberspace

It is not known if Cyberspace came into being with the rise of computers and the Information Age on Earth, or if it has always existed and only became accessible from Earth at this point. All computers touch on Cyberspace and it is an echo of the Astral Plane for digital entities like artificial intelligences. The hero Mystère draws her power from Cyberspace and some of the entities that exist there.

Limbo

Limbo is a nowhere realm, a nothing place. It is frequently home to spirits of the dead who cannot move on to one of the Afterworlds.

THE MAGIC LANDS

The Magic Lands are dimensions where magic rules. They were once more closely tied to Earth, and can still be reached by those with magical knowledge, but over time have drifted further away or deliberately cut themselves off.

Realm of Faerie

The home of the Fair Folk, who once dwelt on Earth before slowly pulling away after the Golden Age of Man and the Fall of Camelot. The Lands of Faerie lie at the heart of the Magic Lands and it is ruled by Queen Titania.

Other Mystic Realms

Some of the other known magical dimensions are:

  1. Azarath: The home of a group of mystics who fled Earth and attempted to purge themselves of all evil. Their efforts only attracted the attention of the demon Trigon, and the mystics devoted themselves to protecting the Earth realm from his evil. Raven of the Teen Titans comes from Azarath.
  2. Gemworld: At the sinking of Atlantis several sorcerers and their followers left to found a new home in the dimension of Gemworld. It was governed by the Twelve Houses, who each pos-sessed a mystical gem imbued with magic transferred from Earth. The princess of the House of Amethyst, who was also a Lord of Order incarnate, has attempted to conquer the Gemworld to establish order. In the far future the Gemworld will return to the Earth dimension and become Zerox, the Sorcerer's World.
  3. Land of Nightshades: The Land of Nightshade's is a bizarre world that echoes the worlds of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The realm was apparently destroyed when the evil being known as the Incubus was killed, but it may have survived in some form.
  4. Myrra: A magical dimension with kingdoms of powerful wizards and great warriors, Myrra greatly resembles the medieval lands of fantasy literature. Jim Rook of Earth has traveled to Myrra, where he battled evil as the Nightmaster.
  5. Other Side of the World: The realm known simply as the Other Side of the World is a dimension of magic, where the laws of physics do not apply. Its sole inhabitant appears to be a powerful being known as the Warlock of Ys.
  6. Zrfff: Also known as the Fifth Dimension, it is the home of mystical imps who sometimes travel to Earth to cause mischief, though some are more benevolent. An example of the former is Superman's foe Mxyzptlk and one of the former is Yz, the Thunderbolt that served Johnny Thunder of the Justice Society.

THE AFTERWORLDS

The Afterworlds are the homes of gods and devils and are often the final destinations of the souls of the dead.

Realm of the Just Dead

The Realm of the Just Dead is sometimes known as the waiting room of the Afterlife. Spirits of the re-cently dead begin their journey to their final destination in the Realm of the Just Dead. Spirits in this realm are easier to contact from the mortal realm, and the ghosts and poltergeists that haunt Earth are spirits who for one reason or another were not able to reach the Realm of the Just Dead.

The Divine Realms

The divine realms are the Afterlifes of different religions and homes to the divinities worshipped by mortals. The ones listed here are merely a tiny fraction of the vast numbers of Divine Realms.

  1. Heaven: The first realm according to some, and home to the Presence. It is also the home of the Angelic Hosts. The spirits of those who were judged to be good in life reside in Heaven.
  2. Hell: The realm of Lucifer and Heaven’s dark reflection. It is home to demons and devils and the final destination of the spirits of those judged to have been evil in life.
  3. Mount Olympus: This is the home to the Greek Gods.
  4. Hades: The afterlife of those who followed the Greek Gods, including the idyllic Elysian Fields and the torturous realm of Tartarus.
  5. Realms of Asgard: The home to the Norse Gods.
  6. Heliopolis: The home of the gods of Ancient Egypt.
  7. Domains of Order and Chaos: Not truly an Afterlife, the realms of the Lords of Order and the Lords of Chaos still lie far from the Earthly plane, despite the manipulations of mortals by these beings.

LANDS OF LOGIC

These are the antithesis of the Magic Lands, worlds where science rules instead of magic.

Domain of Reason

The Domain of Reason is the heart of the Lands of Logic much as the Lands of Faerie are to the Magic Lands. It not so much a place as a source of logical concepts, a realm of pure mathematics.

Other Dimensions

Other Lands of Logic include:

  1. Meta-Zone: The home of the planet Meta, a world of high technology and advanced science. It is the home of the dimensional traveler Shade the Changing Man.
  2. Phantom Zone: This dimension is a timeless void where consciousness can survive without a physical body. The scientist Jor-El of Krypton discovered a means of transporting individuals to the Zone, where they would survive as effective immortals in a phantom-like state. Krypton used it as a means of incarcerating their most dangerous criminals. This represented only a small corner of the Phantom Zone, as another part of the dimension, called the Ghost Zone, served as a secret base of operations for the villain Prometheus.
  3. Qward: The planet Qward is the antithesis of the planet Oa and exists in the Anti-Matter Universe.
  4. Teall: The world of Teall is a planet that exists in a subatomic realm and is inhabited by beings of plasma energy. A thousand years in the future the planet’s first astronaut, Quislet, would cross into our universe and eventually join the Legion of Super-Heroes.
