SUPERIOR CITY ACADEMY
HISTORY
The Superior City Academy is a private school that is specially equipped to handle students with metahuman powers. The school was established after the "Sins of Youth" crisis that brought to the public's attention the problems stemming from the growing number of teenagers, and younger children, developing metahuman powers. Superior City has one of the highest number of juvenile metahumans per capita in the country.
The school is funded through a combination of private sector donations and various government grants. The funds are controlled by a board of directors that is currently chaired by philanthropist, and former superhero, Dr. Jacob Keller.
Unlike the DEO-operated federal facilities designed to handle young metahumans, the Superior City Academy is a fully accredited and well-regarded preparatory school and has many non-metahuman students. This has the advantage of providing a normal social environment for the metahuman students.
As one of the only such schools in the country, many of the Academy's students are not local. These students generally live in the on-campus dormitories. The school has recently accepted a number of extraterrestrial students, mostly young refugees from the Imperiex conflict.
Some of the students at the Academy have assumed costumed identities and act as heroes around Superior City, with or without the supervision of members of the Academy faculty.
FACULTY
The Academy Faculty is made up of a mix of individuals from traditional academia and specialists in various metahuman and other esoteric areas of study.
DEREK GREYMOUNT
Derek Greymount is the principal of Superior City Academy. Though he is answerable to the Academy's Board of Directors on general policy decisions, all academic-related matters are his jurisdiction. As far as the students are concerned his is the ultimate authority, and they know it. Though he possesses no superpowers, Greymount is more than capable of handling even the most ill-behaved and powerful of the metahuman students in his charge. He has cowed unruly students with a mere gaze and there are very few people on the planet who can match Derek Greymount in a battle of wills.
Some suspect that Greymount was once a costumed vigilante, and they would be right. He operated as the shadowy Wyvern in Empire City nearly three decades earlier. Some of the students at the Academy, however, suspect that their principal is actually Darkseid of Apokalips in disguise.
DR. LEIGH TRAMMELL
Dr. Trammell is in charge of the metahuman research facility at the Academy. Though fairly young, she is already acknowledged as the regions foremost expert on biochemistry and superhuman physiology.
Dr. Trammell began studying medicine and science after watching many of her family and friends succumb to cancer caused by illegal chemical dumping in Superior City's west end almost twenty years ago. Her studies of the metahuman children attending the Academy has shown there is a connection between the source of the mutations in the children and the source of the cancer from years ago. Her research is close to finding that link, a link that would lead Dr. Trammell to the illegal activities of the Jensik Medical Institute. If Cell 13, the Institute's black projects division, learns how close Dr. Trammell is to finding that link, she may soon find herself in grave danger.
AARON WILKERSON
Aaron Wilkerson is the Industrial Arts (aka Shop Class) instructor at the Academy. Like many other faculty members, Aaron has a history with the metahuman community. In his case, Aaron once operated as the gadgeteer called Mr. Fix-It. In addition to the more traditional vocational skills, Aaron also uses his expertise to teach the students about advanced technologies. Prior to joining the Academy, Aaron had been the shop teacher at Spring Grove High School, where he had taken on a mentor role for a small group of students who operated a set of anime mecha-style powered armor suits. The five had been using these armored suits to fight crime and strange phenomena in their neighborhood as the Iron Brigade.
OTHER FACULTY
Christopher King, also known as Powerhouse, is a Phys-Ed instructor at the Academy. He also teaches courses in how to control a variety of different metahuman powers.
Angelique Marin was the metahuman criminal called Flare, who ran a gang of super-powered adolescents. When she and the gang were arrested the kids were enrolled in the Academy and, as part of a plea-bargain, Angelique is serving a community service sentence by acting as a metahuman powers instructor at the Academy.
Alicia Uchida is the same age of many of the students but is actually a doctoral student at Centennial University studying medicine with a specialization in metahuman biology. As part of her studies Alicia has been studying under Dr. Trammell at the Academy. Alicia is also secretly the super-hero Orchid.
